What is DOC (Degree of Circularity)?

DOC stands for Degree of Circularity.

It is a form of polarized Raman, measured by using incident circularly polarized light and measuring the differential circular response (IR − IL).

Why it’s useful:

  • Excellent for comparing ROA instruments – because DOC has an absolute value and is normalized, it is an excellent metric to compare across ROA instruments.
  • Crucial for detecting artifact-prone bands – if a molecule has a strong Raman peak and a strong DOC peak in the same region, it is likely that the ROA signal there comes not from the chiral activity tensors, but from the polarized Raman signal.

Why does this matter? Artifact-prone peaks can be excluded from absolute configuration assignments, increasing the confidence in your results.

✅ All Enantios ROA instruments include built-in DOC measurements. We always recommend measuring DOC — especially for new and complicated systems.
